Writing drawer

These two photos are of one of our family’s most used drawers. It is one of two in the middle of a cabinet in our living room, a cabinet that is so wobbly that it is due to be replaced. Unfortunately, the new one has no drawers so the contents will need to be relocated! This drawer is the home to many of our writing and stationery items. I love writing letters, so the rainbow of pens is often used, to communicate with friends and relatives, to send messages in hand made cards, and jot notes in my many notebooks. The pencil with the handy rubber daily solves and corrects crossword clues, and we bulk bought biros for our son’s A level studies! I’m pleased that I have recorded our drawer before it draws to a close!

A common rhythm

extraordinary-drawers-entry-36

This drawer contains some of my collection of simple, hand-held percussion instruments. Over the years they have accompanied me into residential care homes, hospices, schools and churches; they have been held, shaken and tapped by patients in palliative care, people with dementia, young people in youth groups and toddlers in playgroup; they have been used to express frustration, excitement, anger and joy and they have contributed to a sense of unity among those who have managed to achieve a common rhythm.

And now this drawer and its contents are a favourite of my two year old grandsons!

A Passion for Preparing Food

extraordinary-drawers-entry-35

Here is one of my favourite drawers.

Like many people I have a passion for preparing food for myself, family and others and eating it.

I also have a passion for kitchen gadgets to help me make special food, savoury and sweet, particularly cakes. This large drawer helps me keep things in order and organised.

Each item holds memories for me and I really appreciate remembering who gave them to me, or where I bought it or salivating over tasty, attractive things I have made. I particularly like my vintage fruit spoon and cake server which have been passed on. The memory of Uncle George trying to straighten the curved grapefruit knife still makes me smile.

Pagan Drawer

extraordinary-drawers-entry-34

This is my Pagan drawer. The lining cloths at the bottom are Nuno felted, I work with wool quite a lot, spinning, dyeing, and weaving. The board at the back was made by a friend, who does pyrography . I like coloured lights, so there they are all lit up. Apart from electric lights, I celebrate all natural things within my beliefs. I grow sage and other herbs, there are home made sage sticks on the right. They can be lit, and made to smoulder, to make the place smell nice, also Pagans, ( and I believe Spiritualists) use them for cleansing and protection during ceremonies. Basic Ceremonies are based on the Sun’s cycle, and seasons, 8 per year. And you can have ceremonies for other things, phases of the moon etc, or anything natural really. Cake and mead are often featured! I found the chalice at a French street sale, it has bees engraved on it.  I have a few natural stones, and some pendants. The pentangle is my favourite,  my husband had it made for me, very special !

Incompatible Drawers…

My drawer, containing five trays of DCM embroidery silks all neatly stored in numerical order. My husband’s drawer containing (among other things) assorted batteries, magnifying glass with handle broken off, badge from 40th birthday card (25 years ago), tin of stuff never used, thing for tuning harpsichord which we no longer have, school rulers, mint tins containing treasury tags and ink pen cartridges, old roll of film, and miscellaneous bits of computer connection things.

After over 40 years of married life, I’m beginning to wonder if we might be incompatible…

A lifetime of knitting memories

extraordinary-drawers-entry-31

This is my knitting drawer of many, many memories. It holds memories of matinee coats and bootees, for babies I knew, and shoe box babies from all over the word. School pullovers, scarves, hats and mittens. Teddy Bear hand puppets played with by those same children. I have no idea how many. Little Santa Boots with sweets to hang on the tree. Easter Chickens pregnant with chocolate eggs! Hats for the homeless, hats for little girls and boys. A Tom Baker scarf for my son to go to the football match.

It’s getting harder now, I must have been knitting more than 70 years, but still I knit and natter with our weekly craft group.

Memories of childhood

extraordinary-drawers-entry-29

Here’s my ‘cuddlies and story book’ drawer, which holds memories of childhood. The contents belong to my two daughters who are now adult, but there’s also something of mine. Spot the threadbare teddy bear!

There are other hidden keepsakes too – a lock of fine baby hair and a tiny first tooth that the Tooth Fairy forgot to take when she left her silver coin under the pillow.
